Like many companies, Carrier widely consumes open source software in the products it creates. Like all consumers of open source software, the security profile of Carrier product software can be directly impacted by the security of the open source software used in those products. In addition, Carrier has some exceedingly long product support lifetimes that aren't found in many other industries. In this presentation, I'll talk about some of the difficulties in supporting the use of open source software in industrial systems produced by Carrier, discuss a hypothetical software stack as an example of the problems including the support and security difficulties they pose, and finally touch on how OpenSSF projects like Security Baseline, Scorecard, Minder and others produce a rising tide that lifts all boats making open source software more secure for everyone to use.
